A trader made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the period preceding former President Trump stated on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However these probabilities had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also profited large payouts from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Emerges

Politicians are starting to take note.

A new rule presented on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the United States, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
