Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
